How Destination Experiences Elevate Corporate and Team Events

Corporate destination events turn meetings into experiences. Learn how to plan retreats and incentive travel that connect remote teams, with tips and a case study.

In today's experience economy, companies no longer just book a venue for their conferences and meetings - they want an event built around a destination. Place has become a major factor in planning incentive travel experiences and corporate destination events. Global travel trends continue to influence corporate events, from the selection of a host city and venue, to the design of the event program and agenda. TK Events places high importance on corporate destination selection for events to connect with employees and audiences in meaningful ways.

‍

What Differentiates a Destination Experience from a standard Meeting

A destination experience is a corporate or team event designed around the character of a place, weaving in its culture, food, landscape and activities, rather than simply held there in a conference center or meeting space.

It delivers authenticity, cultural immersion and often an interactive experience attendees couldn't have on their own. Local sourcing is key.

How influential this trend has become can be observed in the way luxury brands are moving into hotels and other hospitality venues, recognizing that immersive lifestyle experiences lead to sales. A recent article in The European points to how brands such as Armani and Bulgari are opening hotels, citing consumers "need for emotional engagement." It's not enough to own a luxury product, today's consumers want to live an experience with their favorite brands.

All of these trends are key factors in the crafting of corporate events, conferences, sales kick-offs, and incentive and rewards programs. There’s a direct link  link between today's consumer and traveler choices with the expectations of corporate audiences.

The Meeting Magazines Power of Place article notes that, "Today’s most memorable incentive programs and corporate gatherings succeed not because they ignore their location, but because they embrace it fully."

Those priorities were echoed at the 2026 BC Tourism Industry Conference where the panel noted attendees want to connect to a destination, they don’t want ‘off the shelf’ experiences. The goal is to make them feel special and align with their values.

The shift means moving from simply booking meeting space to searching for a destination and venue that sparks interest, and then creating an experience that celebrates the location and builds lasting memories. Corporate retreat destinations offer something a simple meeting in a banquet hall or ballroom can never achieve. It means a culinary experience versus simply food and beverage orders, a tour of a historical old town versus a hotel reception. A menu of local cultural activities to choose from versus another afternoon of breakouts. It offers a chance for remote teams to spend time with one another beyond a meeting room or zoom call.

‍

Why are companies choosing corporate destination events?

We've written about the 'age of loneliness', the craving for human connection and its relation to the demand for events. As companies adapt to the era of remote workers, new priorities are emerging. Teams want shared, memorable time together, and destination immersion delivers much better than a meeting room, zoom call or slack channel. It connects hybrid and remote teams, rewards performance and is a factor in attracting and keeping talent. Destination team building activities build camaraderie that is missing in today's corporate culture where water cooler, hallway conversations and laughter in a meeting room have disappeared.

At the recent SKIFT Women Leading Travel conference in Montreal, hosted by Business Events Montreal, the VP, Sales and Convention Services, Tourism Montreal, noted in her opening remarks that tourism and hospitality is not just an industry about destinations and venues, but about connecting people.

The panel with women leaders from Air Canada addressed the shift in what is defining travel experiences. It's not just about luxury - customers wanted to be comforted, cared for and paid attention to. It's high touch and personalized. Their focus is on brand expression and asking what is the feeling you want customers to leave with.  These are the same drivers for corporate destination event and incentive travel experiences.

Corporate Conferences are adopting the same approach - choosing destinations that will appeal to their audience and using the destination as part of promotions. Event programs are designed to take attendees out of a conference center to experience the city. TK Events client programs in Phoenix and Savannah have seen the influence of place in the ways attendees embrace their conference experience.  In Savannah, taking the ferry to the conference each day was all part of the experience, as was a Riverboat Cruise evening event that showcased the city's unique history. Culinary experiences that move beyond standard breaks and turn into social sharing moments.

Turning corporate events into unforgettable destination experiences

Destination experiences can move your team event from good to great. It means starting with a vision or concept for the overall event experience. When you combine creative vision with people, and the right destination or location, the benefits are lasting.

  • Shared memories that strengthen culture and have lasting impact Moving employees from their daily work environment into a relaxed setting helps build deeper relationships. Employees become more aligned, barriers are dismantled- fostering a true team environment.
  • Destination team building that feels natural, not forced Activities that spark curiosity, provide an opportunity to explore, or tasks that involve working together toward a common goal or to solve challenges, will help develop meaningful connections. In today's remote work environments it can move teams from feeling like strangers to true colleagues.
  • Incentive travel experiences that reward performance motivate employees. Research from the  Incentive Travel Index by SITE and Incentive Research Foundation, shows that incentive reward programs promote productivity, lead to increased sales/revenue and result in employees identifying and feeling more aligned with their company's culture and vision.
  • A stronger story for your brand and people fostering a deeper understanding of a corporation - moving from 'it's just a job' mentality to a true sense of belonging.

The result: trust and relationships are built, ideas flow, business moves forward and energy is a palpable feeling that carries on long after the event ends. The event becomes one of those 'remember when' moments in company stories.

Planning Your Destination Experience - A Checklist

A great destination experience needs one partner who owns the vision and mission, plus local experts on the ground. A detailed brief with the client at kick off, along with a comprehensive process and framework for sourcing and event planning ensures effective cost control .

Key questions in the brief provide insights, and event objectives form our strategy to start planning :

  1. Goals and audience: what the event needs to achieve. In this case, the client indicated their workforce is completely remote and the kick-off event has emerged as a critical business goal to connect their employees and align them around the company's vision, strategy snd expectations for the upcoming fiscal year.
  2. Destination selection: Matching the place to those goals. The company is global, and their diverse needs had to be considered in the selection of the destination. We drew on our deep partnerships with global hotels and resorts for sourcing the right location and venue.

Navigating geo-political factors is a significant component in sourcing and influences the destination selection. In Skift's State of Travel Report safety and security top the list of concerns among today's travellers.

Pinpointing emerging, amazing Tier 2 destinations that are eager for corporate groups, helps in getting the most out of event budgets while avoiding locations suffering from over tourism, another key concern for corporate event planners.

Skift's numbers also show that "Travel Is a Lifestyle Priority," which means corporations should expect consumer and traveler influences and mindsets to factor into expectations placed around corporate events.

  1. Experience design: the personalization of the activities, venues, entertainment and key moments crafted for the entire group, are what separate an average business meeting operation, from corporate destination events. Programming dedicated towards play and competitive spirit tends to ensure trip success.
  2. Sourcing local partners, including local Destination Management Companies (DMCs), suppliers and guides helps deliver local authenticity. In charge of destination development, they have critical knowledge of local resources that ensure ease in navigating an unfamiliar location or country, to delivering the immersive locales and venues that elevate the event. We rely on local DMC's to support delivery on the ground while we focus on the strategic design and management of the experience.
  3. Logistics: Large group travel, transfers, accommodation and scheduling are critical to ensure the experience is seamless and free of stress. Choosing venues within close proximity to airports so that attendees with long flights don't have additional travel and can support cost concern.
  4. On-site management and follow-up with reporting tied to metrics, ensures that execution delivers a smooth event experience for attendees.
Stunning views of St. Julian's in Malta
Case study: an event built around Destination Malta

When a recent tech client came to us to plan their company kick-off, the brief disclosed some key objectives, but also some revealing truths. One comment turned out to be a major factor in our destination and venue sourcing. While they had previously sourced luxury hotels, the client didn't feel the last host venue was in keeping with their brand. It didn't reflect their position as a visionary tech company - contemporary, futuristic, leaders in innovation.

The client wished to put the experience first. The destination must appeal to employees as a sought after destination and features prominently in appealing to new hires.

Employees come from 15 countries and it was important that travel required no more than one stop-over.

The event venue needed to be easily accessible to a vcity/town for exploring, group activities and dine-around evenings.

Additionally, as a tech company, technical infrastructure is important which means they need internet that works!

Contemporary + technology infrastructure + location were the driving force in sourcing the right corporate retreat destination.

Malta emerged as the front runner, a jewel in the Mediterranean, with the Marriott Malta perched in the bustling resort town of St. Julian's, as the host venue. The destination and resort hotel checked all the boxes. With a promenade right outside the hotel that stretches for miles, to a selection of local restaurants for dining experiences, to the proximity to Valetta, a UNESCO world heritage site for a group tour activity. Having a client declare they would never have sourced or found the destination and venue on their own was a testament to the value of an event agency as partner.

Destination experiences in Toronto, Vancouver and London, UK

Closer to home, for us at TK Events, our home cities of Toronto, Vancouver and London, UK offer some of the world's top destination experiences. We wrote about some of our favourite London venues in our post: The Best Restaurants in London for Corporate Events and Private Dining

In Toronto, whether it's a conference or gala in one of the city's cosmopolitan venues, the cultural diversity of dining experiences and neighborhoods, exploring Niagara Falls and Niagara Wine Country, or the outdoors and small town flavour of Muskoka and Prince Edward County, the destination experience is world class. For a client's global employee meeting, TK Events managed the business session at the home of the Toronto International Film Festival - the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The rooftop lunch at Malaparte turned into a celebration of the brand with a striking brand takeover of the stairs that created a dramatic effect, lounge furniture that invited employees, many of whom had never met, to settle in and socialize. A scavenger hunt around the city created time for connection, team bonding and fun, capped off in the evening with a company picnic at RendezViews, Toronto's biggest outdoor picnic center.

In Vancouver, we can attest to the elevated dining experiences available to visitors , having produced the Michelin Awards celebrating Vancouver's restaurants and culinary scene. Whether you're looking for an urban experience while exploring nature right on your doorstep with Stanley Park, Grouse Mountain, or experiences on Vancouver Island and Whistler, the wonder of the Pacific Northwest shines through in every event. Market-to-table food tours help visitors understand a destination through its cuisine and agriculture. The destination allows delegates to authentically connect with nature, indigenous practices and creates space for key relationship building. Our work during the FiFA World Cup with Canada Soccer bought global communities together in a spectacular show of immersive, curated destination experience at the Shipyards in North Vancouver. A location which offers a myriad of venue options and an epic view of downtown Vancouver.

DMO's or Tourist Boards often offer incentive funds to attract programs to our destinations.
